COMPTON, Calif. (April 13, 2006) Mid Cities Schools Credit Union is pleased to honor Barbara Johnson, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Lynwood Unified School District, with a Gold Apple Award for her outstanding contributions to the community.
Ask her what she does for a living, and Barbara is likely to say modestly, “I’m an educator.” But she does so much more. “I look for a day when education will be like the landscape, free for all, with beauty and truth for everyone to reach his or her potential,” she said.
Barbara’s accomplishments speak just as eloquently as her words. She is a skilled organizer, coordinating and implementing a host of programs that have greatly improved the effectiveness of instruction in the Lynwood Unified School District. These include:
- Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) Program
- Mock Trial, Math-A-Thon, Oratorical, and Choral/Instrumental Competitions
- Partnerships with National Education Trust, UCLA & Boeing Engineers
- Visual and Performing Arts Saturday Enrichment Program
- Co-Authored & Obtained $4.9 Million in Grants for Lynwood District
- Foreign Language French Institute
- Spelling Bee, Science Fair & More
Barbara holds Masters and Bachelor Degrees from USC, along with an Elementary Life and Administrative Credential. She is married to an Educator and has a son attending NYU in the Masters Program. Barbara serves on too many prestigious education groups to mention here, yet somehow she also finds time to direct the Beulah Baptist Church Youth Choir.
“She is a worthy recipient of our Gold apple Award,” said Charlotte Johnson, CEO of Mid-Cities Schools Credit Union.
